Abstract

This dataset contains the data from the simulations presented in the article published Plasma Sources Science and Technology (PSST):

"PIC/Fluid Simulations of the Plasma Expansion in a Magnetic Arch"

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6595/adab8e

The data in this repository is the result of several hybrid fluid/PIC simulations as described in the reference. For further information on the setup, numerical parameters and physical meaning of the simulations please refer to the article}

Dataset description

The simulations that produced the datasets in this repository were run with the planar, polytropic version of EP2PLUS. The data is at steady-state, and has been averaged over the last 200 simulation time-steps to reduce numerical noise. This averaging has been performed directly by the code through time-step accumulation techniques.

Data files

Each HDF5 data-group contains the mesh coordinates and plasma properties at steady-state of a specific simulation. In particular the naming convention is the following:

  • Chi30.hdf5: Contains the results of the "reference simulation" presented first in the article. For this simulation the hall parameter is assumed uniform and equal to 30
  • Chi3.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation with a reduced magnetic field and a uniform hall parameter equal to 3
  • Chi10.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation with a reduced magnetic field and a uniform hall parameter equal to 10
  • Chi150.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation with an increased magnetic field and a uniform hall parameter equal to 150
  • Big_Domain.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation with a doubled domain size and a uniform hall parameter equal to 150
  • In-Space.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation with in-space boundary conditions on the electron currents and a hall parameter equal to 150
  • BGP.hdf5: Contains the results of the simulation that considers the presence of neutral particles and of a uniform neutral background density representing the facility background

In each of these data-groups the quantities are given at the nodes of the simulation mesh:

  • xs: Physical x coordinates [m]
  • zs: Physical z coordinates [m]
  • Bx: Magnetic field along x [T]
  • Bz: Magnetic field along z [T]
  • n: Plasma (ion) density [1/m³]
  • phi: electric potential [V]
  • Phi: Thermalized potential [V]
  • ji_x: Ion current along x [A/m²]
  • ji_y: Ion current along y [A/m²]
  • ji_z: Ion current along z [A/m²]
  • je_x: Electron current along x [A/m²]
  • je_y: Electron current along y [A/m²]
  • je_z: Electron current along z [A/m²]

In the datafiles of the BGP simulation note that "fi" and "si" stand respectively for fast and slow ions, and that the following additional data is provided:

  • nn: Neutral density [1/m³]
  • fn_x: Neutral flux along x [1/(m² s)]
  • fn_y: Neutral flux along y [1/(m² s)]
  • fn_z: Neutral flux along z [1/(m² s)]

Note that all the other quantities shown in the article may be obtained from the ones saved here by simply remembering that the gas employed is Xenon and that all ions are singly charged.
